The Cave

Players act as a speleologist team exploring a newly discovered cave, revealing tunnel tiles and building the board as they go. Each turn grants five action points to move, discover and explore tiles, manage supplies, and establish camps for equipment storage. Ropes, oxygen and batteries enable descents, underwater exploration and other hazards, and a camera is required to photograph special wonder tiles. Backpacks consume basic supplies each turn spent away from the base, forcing periodic returns and careful planning about what to carry. Points come from exploring tile types and earning majority bonuses for the most of each type when the cave is fully explored.

This game plays very similarly to Expedition: Northwest Passage. I like Expedition, but I think I might like this even better. You explore this cave by revealing tiles through an action points system similar to Tikal and the mask games. You reveal tiles that have different pictures of tokens on them, and gathering the tokens is a bit different depending on what gear you have on you. There are points for tokens, most of each type of tokens, and then points for depth reached. You want to explore and explore, but if you run out of food, all you can do is slowly crawl back to camp one tile at a time, so it's important to leave enough time to get back. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :nostar: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::nostar::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
