In the near future, the Perma effect causes players of online games to merge with virtual worlds, leaving their physical bodies comatose. Some people enter these worlds willingly to escape illness, trauma, disability, or difficult lives, seeking refuge in vast sword-and-sorcery MMORPGs. Others become trapped in simulations ranging from puzzles to burning tank hulls, unable to return to reality.
