Coming of Age
A guide to using coming-of-age themes in adventures, focusing on characters as they mature and move through significant stages of life. Growth may be literal, such as moving from childhood into adolescence, or metaphorical, such as starting a new career, living independently, or adapting to the loss of an important resource. By the end of the story, the protagonist has mastered an aspect of life, taken control of their destiny, and come into their own. Examples include Great Expectations, Huckleberry Finn, Jane Eyre, To Kill a Mockingbird, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
