A bus carrying dreamers, has-beens, and never-will-bes travels across the United States to stage a musical. Players take on roles within the touring company, including the heartbreaker, faded star, stage parent, and last-minute replacement. They navigate rehearsals, performances, tense relationships, petty rivalries, economic uncertainty, and the pressures of pursuing—or abandoning—their ambitions. Characters express their feelings through song as the production and its personal dramas unfold from city to city.
