Failure on the Tugela

The British attempts to relieve Ladysmith during the Boer War after the failure at Colenso, covering the actions at Tabanyama Heights, Spion Kop and Val Krantz in January and February 1900. A battalion- and battery-level game focused on British brigade and divisional leadership. Players make up to three breakthrough attempts, with each result affecting Boer confidence, available forces and future scenarios. Command confusion, difficult terrain, peak areas, artillery fire, pontoon bridges and event counters represent the operational problems faced by Buller and his commanders. Four possible breakthrough scenarios are selected according to previous attempts and their outcomes.
