Land Cruisers: The Lithuanian Campaign

The First Great War ended in December 1916 with Wilson’s Peace, a negotiated settlement that left all parties vaguely dissatisfied (except those no longer called on to die by the millions). The Second Great War erupted in August 1940, with Serbian, Russian, French and Italian armies attacking the Central Powers in a naked grab for territory and power. The Imperial Russian Army, equipped and trained for new tactics known as molniyenosnaya voyna, launched an unprovoked invasion of Central Powers allies Poland and Lithuania. The defenders had no answer for the masses of Russian tanks supported by helicopters and rockets. But they hung on grimly nonetheless, waiting for help to arrive from their Imperial German allies. The Germans dispatched their most secret weapon to blunt the Russian advance: the massive mobile fortresses known as Land Cruisers. These huge, crawling machines bristled with heavy cannon and automatic weapons, and even carried their own dedicated troops.
