Roll for the Galaxy: Ambition

2015 · Expansion for Base-game

Roll for the Galaxy: Ambition

Adds 14 new factions, 7 home worlds, 5 unique tiles, two new die types (Leader and Entrepreneur), and optional objective tiles. Each player starts with a Leader die in their cup that speeds early play; Leader dice cannot be acquired later. Leader and Entrepreneur dice introduce faces that show two phase symbols or a phase plus a dollar sign, allowing automatic phase shifts or return-to-cup behavior when used. Leader dice used to Consume always match the world’s color; Entrepreneur dice never match worlds. Twenty objective tiles supply temporary goals that award Talent counters when met; Talent counters can act as one-shot wild workers (and are worth points if unused at game end).

This expansion perfectly compliments the original game and adds nothing that seems out of place. They could have added some more settle/develop tiles IMO than the 5-6 they added. Other than that this feels like a nice bump of new content for the game.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

How do I set up the Ambition components and dice?

Add the new faction, home world, and game tiles and the new dice to the base game; add the 5 new game tiles to the bag. During setup, each player puts 2 Home (white) dice and 1 Leader (black) die in the cup (not 3 Home dice). (see page 1)

If an effect reduces my credits to 0, do I stay at 0 until after Recruiting?

No — if an effect reduces your credits to 0 during a phase, then after that effect finishes you immediately reset your credits to 1 (instead of waiting until after Recruiting). (see page 2)

What do two‑phase die faces do during Assign and Reveal?

During Assign you may place a die showing two phase icons in either of those phase columns and reassign powers apply based on the column chosen; during Reveal, if it was assigned to one of its two phases but that phase did not occur, immediately shift it to the other displayed phase (if that phase occurred) instead of sending it to the cup. (see page 2)

What does the $ symbol on a die face do?

The $ symbol has no effect during Assign or Reveal; during the Phases step, if a die shows $ and finishes a task matching its displayed face, return it to the cup rather than the Citizenry. (The rulebook also clarifies when tasks are considered finished: Explore/Ship immediate, Develop/Settle after completing the tile, Produce after the good is shipped.) (see page 2)

How do Talent counters (Talent workers) work — can I assign, recall, and score them?

During Assign you may keep Talent counters behind your screen and assign them as workers to any phase (they count as dice but cannot be used to Dictate); during Reveal unassigned or mis‑assigned Talent return to your unused Talent counters, during Phases assigned Talent do work and are removed to the supply when they finish a task (or returned to your unassigned counters if they didn’t), they can be recalled normally during Manage Empire, and each Talent counter you hold at game end is worth 1 VP. (see page 3)

If a tile tells me to remove a die, where can that die come from and does removal from a world count as a settler?

When instructed to remove a die you may choose any of your starting dice or dice granted by tiles (commonly a Home/white die); for example, a Military die removed may come from anywhere in your empire, and if it is removed from the world you are completing it does not count as a settler toward completing that world. (see pages 2 and 4)
