Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
From publisher blurb: At the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Spock was dead. This was, from a storytelling perspective, a daring gambit. Leonard Nimoy had previously voiced his dissatisfaction with the role, and mistakenly thinking The Wrath of Khan was destined to be the last of the Star Trek movies, had returned for it only after being offered a death scene of epic proportions. Since the 1960s, Spock had been an integral part of what made Star Trek a hit, so once it became evident that Star Trek II would not be the end of the line, the studio was presented with a conundrum: How could they unkill Spock and, perhaps more importantly, how could they build a story around that? As it turns out, resurrecting Spock wasn’t the issue, the seeds had already been planted to allow some wiggle room in The Wrath of Khan when Spock’s coffin was shown on the surface of the Genesis planet. The question was how to build a dramatic story around it. What if Spock might be alive but Kirk was prevented from doing anything about it? What if political fallout from the Genesis experiment began to throw up roadblocks at every turn? What if Starfleet seemed to turn its back on some of its most storied officers? In such circumstances, what would Kirk be willing to give up to save his friends? This was the compelling story the third movie needed, because James T. Kirk, the man who never accepted a no-win scenario, who was always willing to trade himself for his crew, wouldn’t hesitate to throw away something so paltry as a career for the sake of his best friend.
