The Functions of Role-Playing Games
This study examines the psychological and sociological functions of role-playing games. It explores how tabletop, live-action, and virtual games encourage creativity, self-awareness, group cohesion, problem-solving, and exploration of identity. A participant-observer ethnography includes interviews with 19 players and considers role-playing as a form of community building and social interaction.
