A young reader in sleepy Maine exchanges letters with a pen pal in New Orleans, where zombies, bokors, voodoo charms, protective spells, and the occult are part of everyday life. After Hurricane Katrina ends the letters, a new girl arrives at school who resembles the missing pen pal—but she looks changed, and hungry zombies may be close behind.
