Ahoy: Rivals & Renegades

Adds two new pirate factions that expand the naval conflict and can substitute for or combine with factions from the base game. One faction fields orca-led fleets that swarm the board with coordinated pod units and aggressive movement. The other fields turtle crews who deploy catapults to fling units long distances and establish resilient strongholds. Players draft and deploy faction-specific ships, manage movement and combat, and use each faction’s unique abilities to control sea lanes and objectives. The expansion supports standard play and a two-versus-two team variant.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When do I place/use the Blackfish Brigade's fifth die?

You have 5 dice: on your 1st and 2nd turns you place 2 dice each, and on your 3rd turn you place the final (1) die; if you are last in turn order you take your third turn immediately after your second. (p.4)

How do I place Patrols onto my Whale Pod tile and what if there are no spaces or no Veteran Patrols left?

When you place a die in a Sail, Tailwind, or Cannons slot you also place the indicated Patrol (or Veteran Patrol for the indicated slot) from your supply onto an empty space on your Whale Pod tile; if there are no empty spaces you place nothing, and if you must place a Veteran Patrol but have none you place a normal Patrol instead. (p.4)

How does Migrate move the Whale Pod and how do Patrols get placed onto the map from it?

Migrate (place a 1–3 die) moves the Whale Pod figure up to the die’s value to adjacent regions sharing an edge (it cannot move back into a region it occupied earlier in that action); after each region move you may take a Patrol or Veteran Patrol from your Whale Pod tile and place it into the corresponding space of that region. (pp.5–6)

What does “surrounding” mean when the rules say a space is surrounded?

Surrounding means all eight spaces around a space (the full 3×3 area centered on that space). (p.11)

How does the Range die and Launching Comrades work (when do I roll it and how far can I launch)?

At the end of each round you roll your Range die and place it in the Range die slot; at the end of your turn you may Launch Comrades from your Flagship and Launchers exactly to one Island in a straight line a number of spaces equal to the Range die (you may Launch over Sandbars and map gaps, counting gaps as spaces), and the Range die cannot be changed with gold. (pp.10–11)

In team games can teammates share pieces, gold or crew, and how is Fame handled?

Teammates win together and add their pieces for control and Fame, but you may not use pieces from your teammate’s supply (you can, however, take actions that affect your teammate’s pieces on the map); as an action on your turn you may freely exchange gold and Crew with your teammate if both Flagships are in the same region. (pp.14–15)
