Crash Octopus

2021 · Party Game

Crash Octopus

Players race to recover five distinct types of cargo that floated into the sea after a shipwreck, while a giant octopus and its wandering tentacles interfere. The playing area is the tabletop inside a string perimeter; the octopus head sits at center with tentacles radiating out, player ships and anchors sit near the edge, and cargo is scattered by dropping it off the octopus head. On a turn a player uses their flag to either navigate by flicking their anchor and moving their ship to that anchor, or to flick a cargo token toward their ship. Hitting the ship loads that cargo and advances a bead-based cargo tracker; landing on certain tracker spaces triggers an octopus attack. When the octopus attacks, players drop a die off the head to move the head or tentacles and potentially displace cargo or knock items off ships.

Cute and different dexterity game! PROS - Using the octopus head to disseminate treasure and attacking with the die is a fantastic and not-overused dexterity mechanism! - Mixing the octopus head attacks with the flag flicking makes for an overall varied game. - The theme works, it is fun and kinda innovative. CONS - Some weird and/or unclear situations may happen, specially with the anchors.
