Five Tribes: The Thieves of Naqala

Naqala’s rival leaders recruit influential thieves from the tribes, adding new threats to the struggle for control of the sultanate. This mini-expansion adds six thief cards and a new djinn to the base game. One thief is revealed at the start of the game, and a player buying a djinn may instead purchase the thief for the same price. Each thief is linked to a tribe and can be activated when taking an action with that tribe. The thief forces every other player to discard resources, tiles, djinns, or palaces, after which the activating player chooses one discarded item to keep. The new djinn protects its owner from thieves’ effects.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

How do I buy a Thief card instead of a Djinn?

Whenever you buy a Djinn card, you may buy the face-up Thief card instead, at the same cost. Keep it in front of you until you use it (p. 1).

Can I use a Thief on the same turn I buy it?

No. On a later turn, after you perform the Tribe action matching the color of one of your Thieves, you may use it immediately (p. 1).

Who gets affected first when I use a Thief?

Resolve its effect clockwise, starting with the player on your left; then discard the Thief to the box (p. 1).

What if another player can’t discard what my Thief asks for?

They discard whatever they can. Thieves are not Djinns, so effects that apply to Djinns don’t apply to Thieves (p. 2).

Do unused Thief cards score points at the end?

Yes. Add the values of any Thief cards still in front of you to your Djinn Victory Points (p. 1).

Can I use the purple Thief without The Artisans of Naqala?

No. If you aren’t playing with The Artisans of Naqala, remove the purple Thief (Madja ar) from the game during setup (p. 1).
