Hive: The Pillbug

2013 · Expansion for Base-game

Hive: The Pillbug

Adds a pillbug tile to the set that can either move itself one adjacent space or use a special two-step ability to lift an adjacent unstacked bug onto the pillbug and then place it down on another empty space next to the pillbug. The pillbug cannot move a piece that was just moved by the opponent, cannot move pieces in stacks, cannot split the hive, and cannot move pieces through gaps that violate the Freedom to Move rule. Any piece physically moved by the pillbug is rendered immobile on the next turn and cannot move, be moved, or use its special ability. The Mosquito may copy the pillbug’s movement or ability when appropriate, and a pillbug trapped under a stack cannot act.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Can I place a piece next to my opponent’s pieces?

Usually, no: after each player’s first piece, a new piece cannot touch an opponent’s piece when placed. (Rulebook, p. 2)

When do I have to place my Queen Bee?

You may place it on any turn from your first through your fourth, but must place it by your fourth turn. You cannot move any pieces until your Queen Bee is placed. (Rulebook, p. 3)

Can I move a piece if it’s the only thing connecting two parts of the Hive?

No. The Hive must remain connected at all times, so you cannot move a piece if doing so would split the Hive or strand pieces. (Rulebook, p. 11)

Can a piece move into or out of a space if it’s surrounded?

Most pieces must be able to slide physically into or out of a space; if surrounding pieces block that movement, it is illegal. The Grasshopper, Beetle, Ladybug, and Mosquito have stated exceptions. (Rulebook, p. 12)

What happens if I can’t move or place a piece?

Your turn passes to your opponent, who takes another turn; this continues until you can move or place, or a Queen Bee is surrounded. (Rulebook, p. 13)
