2021 · Card Game
Hórreos
In 18th-century Galicia, neighboring villages compete to build the finest raised granary, balancing length, ornamentation, and protection from mice. Players simultaneously select actions to acquire, steal, build, or sabotage construction plans. Action order can disrupt those plans as players assemble their structures and compete for points.

A little game with a nice mechanic and a not-so-nice one. PROS - The idea of constructing an hórreo is cool, and the mechanics are OK: they're basic, reminding you of fully-fledged games like Walking in Burano, but they're functional and present some nice decisions. - The theme is great! There are not many games outside Spain featuring Galician traditions or settings, so this is very welcome. CONS - The action cards mechanic feels unpolished. Some interactions are weird, and the game can enter an endless loop that will only be broken if a player actively decides to do so by playing something they feel is suboptimal. There is no real way to advance the game towards its end if players decide not to do so. Major design flaw here. - The tie-breaker for playing the same action feels lazy and is not functional. The game is way too fast to keep track of who's the starting player, mostly because in most cases it does not matter. Very fiddly. - The art is too mute for me. I miss vibrant colors, or maybe a different style. It is not terrible, but not eye-catching either.
