Scythe: Invaders from Afar

2016 · Expansion for Base-game

Scythe: Invaders from Afar

Two distant factions arrive on the map, bringing distinct playstyles and unique faction abilities to the game. Each new faction uses its own faction mat, miniature, and custom tokens to develop economy, deploy mechs, and contest territories while interacting with the existing player powers and objectives. The expansion also provides additional player mats, solo Automa cards, and components organized in a custom insert to integrate with the base game and increase the maximum player count.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

How and when can Albion place a Flag token?

After your character ends movement (including after combat or an encounter), Albion may place a Flag token from their supply on that territory; a territory may only have one faction token and Flags may not be moved or removed once placed (page 4).

Does a Flag automatically count as a territory for Albion scoring?

A Flag counts as an additional territory for Albion at end-game only if Albion controls the Flag’s territory with a character, mech, worker, or an unoccupied structure AND the Flag is not on a territory adjacent to Albion’s home base (page 4).

What happens when a unit moves onto an armed Togawa Trap?

If an opponent moves onto an armed Trap, the unit’s movement ends, flip the Trap to its disarmed side and immediately apply the revealed penalty if possible (this occurs before anything else, including combat) (page 6).

Can an opponent build on a territory with a Trap and who controls it at game end?

An opponent may build a structure on a territory with a Trap; at game end, if the only player tokens there are the structure and the Trap, the player with the structure controls the territory (page 6).

Can Traps be removed or moved once placed?

No — Trap tokens may not be removed or moved once placed; they have armed and disarmed sides and remain on the board for scoring and interactions (page 6).

Are the new mech/character abilities limited (like once per turn or once per combat)?

Yes — abilities specify their limits: e.g., Toka lets one character or mech cross a river once per turn when moving; Suiton allows movement to/from lakes and grants one extra combat card once per combat on a lake; Ronin grants 2 power before combat when you have exactly one unit; Shinobi allows movement to Trap spaces regardless of distance and has specific arming rules (pages 4 and 7).
