Spades

1938 · Card Game

Spades

A trick-taking partnership game played with a standard deck, where each player receives thirteen cards and bids the number of tricks they expect to take. Partners combine their bids and attempt to meet the total, following suit when possible, with spades always serving as trumps. Successful bids score points based on the number bid, while failed bids lose points. A nil bid allows a player to aim for no tricks while their partner continues to play normally. Rules and scoring may vary by group or regional variation.
