Targi: The Expansion

2016 · Card Game

Targi: The Expansion

Adds water tokens, shifting sand cards, and the Targia pawn to the base game. Water acts as a wildcard that can substitute for goods or be spent in place of gold on many tribe cards, offering flexible currency options. The Targia moves along edge cards and grants a favor when a Targi is placed on her space: take a goods token of choice or pay a good to reveal and claim the top card of the draw pile. Shifting sand edge cards give strong one-time benefits for placing a Targi there but cost an intersection from the central play area, changing placement priorities.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Is water a type of goods, and what can I do with water during the game and at the end?

Water is not a type of goods; you can trade 3 water = 1 gold or 2 water = 1 goods at any time, you score 1 victory point for every 2 waters at the end of the game, and if you have more than 10 water at the end of a round you must use the excess or return it to the supply (page 4).

How do sand dunes work when I place a Targi on them and what happens afterward?

You may place a Targi on an unoccupied sand dune instead of a border card to gain that dune's one‑time advantage, then the dune is discarded after use; only one Targi per dune is allowed and each dune you occupy reduces your available intersection points (actions) by one (page 4).

When and how is the Targia figure used?

At the start of each round, after advancing the robber, move the Targia one space counterclockwise (starting on space 15); she does not block spaces, and if you place a Targi on her space you may either take one goods token of your choice or return a goods token to reveal goods cards and take what is shown (you may repeat by returning another token) (page 3).

What do the new tribe‑card symbols mean (lightning bolt, infinity, triangle, exclamation)?

Lightning bolt = immediate one‑time effect when placed; infinity = continuous effect until game end; triangle = place an action marker on the card and you may use its effect once at any time during your turns; exclamation = the card's advantage applies only at final scoring (page 3).

Can I mix the expansion's tribe cards with the base game's cards, and how should I do that?

The expansion advises you to play only the new tribe cards at first, but to mix them with the base set sort all 90 tribe cards into the five symbol piles, shuffle each pile, take nine cards from each pile face down and combine them to make a 45‑card deck for play (page 5).

When does the game end with the expansion (including the robber/raid), and does the opponent get a final turn?

The game ends after the round in which a player plays their twelfth tribe card (if the starting player ends the game, the opponent still receives a complete turn), and it also ends immediately if the robber reaches the fourth raid space after resolving required payments or surrendering a right‑edge tribe card (page 4).
