Tiny Epic Galaxies: Beyond the Black

Players expand beyond known space by upgrading their fleets with four advanced ship types and hiring specialized pilots whose abilities vary by ship compatibility. Pilots are acquired by spending unused dice that match ship types; hired pilots score victory points and are displayed from a shuffled deck like planets. The more ships a pilot can serve, the weaker their special ability, and matching pilot to ship lowers hiring cost. A press‑your‑luck exploration track lets players venture into deep space to find dwarf planets, resource pickups, or suffer cosmic hazards such as solar storms, black holes, and supernovas. Exploration yields collectible badges in four types that score endgame bonus points. The set also adds new planets and secret missions.

Great expansion to an already great game (perfecting it?). Perhaps the only downside could be that 'Tiny' doesn't apply anymore;-)

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Can I assign pilots to any ship, or only to Advanced Ships?

Pilots are hired to upgrade your normal ships into Advanced Ships and are placed on your Hangar Mat tied to a specific Advanced Ship; the pilot’s ability applies only to that Advanced Ship (pages 4–5).

If I spend dice to hire a pilot, do those dice still perform their die actions and can others follow them?

Dice activated to hire pilots are placed on the Activation Bay and are NOT used for their normal die actions; other players may only spend 1 resource to follow the action of the last die as normal, but may not follow the other die used for hiring nor follow the hire-pilot action (page 5).

When I explore, can I keep drawing cards until I get a good Discovery?

You may take a face-up Exploration Card or reveal the top deck card; if you reveal a green Discovery you may take it and end exploration or leave it face up and draw again (up to 3 face-up cards), but drawing a red Danger ends exploration immediately and if you draw when three cards are already face up you must take the newly drawn card (page 6).

Are Exploration cards public after I take them?

After taking an Exploration Card you resolve its effects and then collect it face down near your Hangar Mat; you may look at your own Exploration Cards but should not show them to other players (page 7).

If my ship is on the Exploration Mat, can it explore again or be moved normally?

A ship that stays on the Exploration Mat cannot use a “Move a Ship” action to explore again, though it can acquire culture while there and may later use a Move a Ship action to leave to a planet or back to its Galaxy Mat; ships placed on a Danger Card’s track must advance via that track and cannot use Move a Ship to leave until the track is finished (page 7).
