2026 · Expansion for Base-game

Wingspan: Americas Expansion

Explore the birds of Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean for new species to add to a wildlife preserve. Players draft and play bird cards with region-specific powers, manage food and egg resources, and activate habitat rows to score points. The expansion introduces a new hummingbird card type that interacts with gameplay and adds density to the bird tableau. Components include a large set of new bird cards, dedicated hummingbird cards and mats, additional goal cards and tiles, and an Automa solo mode. The expansion integrates with the core game (or the compatible standalone Asia edition) to expand species variety and strategic options.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When do I take a hummingbird action?

After you finish a forest, grassland, or wetland row action, take a hummingbird action at the end of your turn. (p. 4)

Do I attract a hummingbird or return one?

If your hummingbird space is empty, attract one from the face-up garden or the deck and gain the benefit shown on its card. If it’s occupied, return that hummingbird to any garden space and move up one space on the track. (p. 4)

Which column can I advance on the hummingbird track when I return a hummingbird?

You may advance in the column matching either the hummingbird you returned or the one you covered in the garden. If you land on a space marked with a hummingbird symbol, take another hummingbird action in any habitat. (pp. 4–5)

Can I attract a hummingbird I just returned, or put one in an occupied space on my mat?

You can’t attract a hummingbird you returned earlier that turn, and you must have an empty hummingbird space to attract one—hummingbirds can’t be bumped. You may attract a hummingbird and then return it on the same turn if you have enough hummingbird actions. (p. 5)

Do hummingbirds count as birds in my preserve?

Yes: a hummingbird on your mat counts as a bird in your preserve and that habitat, and its name can count for bird-name bonuses. It has no points, power, food cost, or egg limit; hummingbirds score through the track instead. (pp. 5–6)

Can I use nectar as any food, and what happens to it at round end?

Nectar is wild when playing a bird and can also pay for requirements asking for any food, but not powers requiring a specific food type. Unless you’re using the Oceania expansion’s additional nectar rules, nothing special happens to nectar at round end, and spent nectar isn’t placed on your mat. (p. 7)
