In a world reshaped by a mysterious conqueror, shadows connect to a realm called the Between, where monsters once hunted anyone clinging to religion, nationality, politics, or commerce. A decade later, scattered communities struggle to care for one another while some people attempt to revive old ideologies or reclaim the world. The game uses a card-based system without skill lists or complex combat rules. Players resolve Character Challenges using four attributes represented by card suits, while Removal Challenges determine whether dangerous situations take characters out of play. Character deaths can grant survivors Memory Points, helping them pursue their goals, though players may also choose to give in to events rather than resist.
