Fanorona

Two-player abstract strategy game from Madagascar played on a dense rectangular grid with 22 black and white pieces. Players alternately move a single piece along lines on the board and capture by either approaching or withdrawing into a line of enemy pieces; captures are compulsory and multi-capture sequences can be forced in one turn. The cramped starting position and dual capture mechanics create complex tactical and positional play where fewer pieces can outmaneuver more. Games can escalate into long forcing sequences and historically carried ritual and cultural significance in their region of origin.
