Players operate rail and mining interests in the Harz Mountains during the late 19th century, building narrow-gauge track to connect static mines and other plants to markets. Play revolves around managing a mix of private and public companies—seven public railroads, fifteen private mines, and up to five public mining companies—buying and selling shares, investing in track and rolling stock, and acquiring or merging mining assets. Train operations, route determination, and revenue calculation use systems distinct from standard 18xx games: early lines use weak engines and difficult terrain raises construction and operational challenges. Decisions balance investing in infrastructure versus consolidating mines, with companies rising or failing based on capital, expansion, and market control.
