Army of Italy: Le Divertissement Royale – The War of the Grand Alliance in Italy, 1690-1696

A strategic wargame covering the War of the Grand Alliance in northern Italy from 1690 to 1696. Players command French forces or a coalition of Savoyard, Spanish, Austrian, German, Huguenot, and Waldensian troops across the Maritime Alps and upper Po Valley. Battalion- and regiment-scale counters represent armies, while movement, battles, sieges, garrisons, supply, political decisions, and shifting alliances shape the campaign. France fields a well-equipped army but must contend with limited reinforcements from Versailles; the Coalition seeks to contain the French, possibly invade France, and manage the uncertain loyalty of Savoy. Scenarios and historical commentary support campaigns based on the period’s military and diplomatic events.
