Doom: The Boardgame

Players take the roles of heavily armed space marines defending a Union Aerospace Corporation research base on Mars from demonic invaders that have broken through a dimensional gateway. One player controls the invading demons while up to three others cooperate to explore claustrophobic rooms and corridors, fight monsters, scavenge weapons and equipment, and complete scenario-specific objectives. Each game uses a scenario setup that defines map layout, special rules, and victory conditions, with modular scenarios dictating different mission goals and challenges.

In terms of dungeon crawlers, this game predates Descent, and has a very similar feel. However, Descent seems bloated compared to Doom. In Doom, setup is quick, the rules are relatively simple and the game plays smoothly without having to look up a lot of extra rules or game terms. It really shines as a fun, but difficult monster-masher game, and the retro video game theme is really fun. Level 7 Omega Protocol shares a similar theme, and does many of the same things, so if I were to recommend picking up a single marines vs monsters dungeon crawl game, it would be that, but this does come in a close second, assuming you have access to both the base game and the expansion for doom. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :nostar: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :star: Multiple plays stay interesting :nostar: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::star::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment Critical expansions: [Doom: The Boardgame Expansion Set](/g/doom-the-boardgame-expansion-set)
