Everdell: Spirecrest

2020 · City Building

Everdell: Spirecrest

Venture into rugged, uncharted highlands where players lead expeditions to discover new locations and recruit unusual critters. Weather cards change conditions each round and impose limitations that must be managed. Discovery cards introduce unique encounters and abilities that alter available strategies, while oversized critter meeples act as special workers and mounts with distinctive powers. The expansion integrates its new mechanics with the base game’s tableau-building and worker-placement systems to create longer, more variable exploration campaigns.

Thoughts after just one play - it improves Everdell in just the way I want it, making it a little more challenging and tactical. Big meeples are utterly cute, can't deny that.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When I Explore, do I have to do Chart, Discover, and Travel in that order — or can I stop after Chart or Discover?

You must perform the Explore action after each Prepare for Season and carry out the three steps in order: Chart, then Discover, then Travel; you cannot skip steps (page 4).

When I Discover and three Discovery cards are revealed, can I play more than one of them?

You may choose only one of the three faceup Discovery cards to play into your area; the other two are placed facedown on the bottom of that deck (page 5).

If I play a Big Critter, does it count as a worker and can it go anywhere (even on already-occupied spaces)?

Big Critters replace one of your workers and are considered workers that may visit all the normal locations and be moved by effects like the Ranger (page 5); however, only specific Big Critters (e.g., Whisper) explicitly ignore exclusive placement rules and may be placed on already-occupied locations (page 10).

When I Travel, when does the Weather card affect me and can other players have different Weather effects than I do?

After you move your Traveler to the next area you reveal that area's Weather card (if not already revealed) and must follow its restrictions while you are in that season; different players can be affected by different Weather cards at the same time depending on which area/season their Traveler is in (page 6).

At the end of the game, how does my Expedition scoring work — do I have to pay for each map tile in order and can I stop anytime?

You must travel through your Expedition tiles in the order you charted them and pay the listed cost for each tile you choose to move onto, but you may stop at any point; you score for the tile your Traveler ends on and all previous tiles to the left that you paid to travel through (page 7).

Do Discovery cards I play count against my city size limit?

Discovery cards do not count against your city size limit (page 5).
