Fire on the Mountain: Battle of South Mountain September 14, 1862

This historical wargame covers the Battle of South Mountain during Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of the North in 1862. Players command brigade-sized units around Turner’s Gap and Fox Gap as Confederate forces delay the Federal advance and await the reunification of Lee’s army. Simple rules model movement, artillery, cavalry, leaders, officer casualties, and the effects of rugged mountain terrain. Reinforcements enter throughout the battle, creating a shifting struggle across the passes. Each turn represents one hour, with hexes covering 300 yards, and a typical game lasts two and a half to three hours.
