Herbaceous

2017 · Card Game

Herbaceous

Players act as herb collectors assembling a varied garden of herbs. Each player manages a personal collection area and a communal pile, drawing cards and choosing whether the drawn herb goes into their collection or into the communal pile; the choice alternates where the next card is placed. Each player has four single-use containers that permit different grouping actions (same type, all different, pairs, or any three). On a turn a player may use a container to form sets from cards in both personal and communal spaces, flip those cards to mark them as collected, and retire that container. Scoring combines card values, matching herbs, and completed sets to determine the best medley.

Looks beautiful, reminds me of Arboretum, but with less 'brutal' gameplay. Not sure about it. It's kind of like an "Is that it?" experience. Sure it's pretty, but I don't think it'll have too much lasting appeal. With a few more plays, I can appreciate it a bit more. Still not my favorite, but a decent one. Its prettiness might keep it in my collection for a while. The solo variant is too luck-dependent for my liking, and the choices in there are either obvious or arbitrary.
