Lancaster

Players take the roles of aristocratic families in early 15th-century England, aiming to increase influence at court and expand their power across the realm. Each round players assign knights to counties, to their castle, or to foreign campaigns: counties award rewards and noble favor through local contests of knight strength; the castle provides income and recruitment; conflicts with France pool player strength for shared outcomes and power points. Parliamentary sessions allow players to promote laws that favor their strategies. The game resolves contests by comparing knight strength, upgrading knighthood, and tracking power points; the player with the most power at the end wins.

Short worker placement game where your workers are essentially treated as bids for the action you place them into, as they can be returned to your worker pool when an opponent displaces them with a greater strength of worker. The tension of having to decide if you want to spend to punt your opponent when doing so could cause you to be punted from another of your placements is pretty good. Points in the game come from somewhat narrow criteria so the method of player interaction begins to feel samey after multiple plays. It's interesting in other games to be bidding for things when players have more diverse goals, but in this game things are very focused so over multiple plays I see certain repetitive predictable play cycles. Mini-expansions attempt to spice this up a bit, and they do a reasonable job, adding new things to vote on and a few action options, but in terms of depth of play, make no mistake that this remains a light to medium game to end the night with, and not a main course. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :star: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :nostar: Multiple plays stay interesting :star: Low or mitigatable luck elements :star::star::star::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
