Set in early 17th-century Italy, players take the role of scholars balancing pursuit of knowledge with the ever-present threat of ecclesiastical scrutiny. On each turn players perform actions like writing treatises to expand their card deck, creating inventions to gain abilities and income, and observing the sky to unlock progressively stronger bonuses. Worker-placement and resource management shape available options while deck-building determines action consistency. A Suspicion mechanic penalizes overt advancement: accumulating Penance cards clogs decks, can lead to imprisonment of a worker, and may impose negative scoring. Advancing on the victory track also increases scrutiny, forcing trade-offs between scoring and risk.
