Conan

Players take the roles of a band of heroes or a single opposing commander in an asymmetric, scenario-driven miniatures game set in a sword-and-sorcery world. Each scenario uses a map and a specific set of miniatures, cards and tokens; games run in a limited number of turns and can be linked into short campaigns or played standalone. Hero players activate individually or rest to recover energy, spending gems to move, attack, defend, pick locks, reroll and use special abilities. The opposing player manages enemy units via a sliding-tile board and an energy pool, spending gems to activate groups of miniatures whose stats and abilities are printed on their tiles. Victory depends on scenario objectives, which vary between hero goals and, in some scenarios, antagonist goals.

We’ve just played the base, retail game of Conan. The role of women in the game is problematic. I understand wanting to be true to the source material, but the playable female character is way less powerful/fun than the male characters, there are nude women portrayed in the manuals, and there is literally a recurring mission task where you have to pick up a female NPC to save her and she follows the same rules as picking up any object. The overall system seems interesting and fun. I like the active/rest turns decision and the general action payment mechanic. But, we have also ran into several missions that seem very unbalanced. These 1 versus many games really shine when it feels like the scenario could go either way right up until the end. It feels like these scenarios could have used more playtesting and more balancing, especially at different player counts.

Otázky k pravidlům

Odpovědi z pravidel od asistenta pravidel Ludoya.

If there are more enemies than allies around me, do I pay extra movement and how?

Yes — when enemies are equal to or outnumber allies in an area you suffer hindering: affected movement steps cost extra movement (see Hindering Movement, page 17).

Does hindering ever make me ignore die symbols on attacks or other rolls?

Yes — hindering can cause you to ignore die symbols on a roll; the rules explain which symbols are ignored and show examples of how to apply this (see Hindering die rolls, page 18).

How does the Guard action work — can I intercept attacks against an ally?

Use the Guard action to protect an adjacent ally: if you successfully Guard, attacks targeting that ally can be resolved against you instead, using your defense and armor as described (see Guard and Armor, pages 11–12).

Do heavy weapons or encumbrance reduce my movement or stop certain skills from working?

Yes — encumbrance from items or skills can impose movement penalties and affect how one- versus two‑handed weapons interact with skills; check the encumbrance and movement penalty rules for how these apply (see page 19).

Can I pick up, throw, or open a chest while I'm hindered?

Manipulation actions (pick up, throw, open chest, etc.) are subject to hindering unless a rule says otherwise; the Reroll action has a specific hindering exception explained with an example for opening a chest (see Manipulation and Reroll, pages 13–14).

How do line of sight and elevation work for ranged attacks — do I get a bonus from high ground?

Ranged attacks require line of sight to the target, and elevation can grant an attack bonus for ranged attacks when the elevation rules apply (see Ranged Attacks and Elevation, pages 10–11).
