Caverna: Cave vs Cave

Each player manages a small dwarven excavation on a mountainside and expands it over eight rounds. Players start with two dwarves and a personal board of face-down building and room tiles, then take increasingly many actions each round to excavate, dig for metals, add living space, and construct buildings. A shared pool of face-up tiles and action tiles governs available purchases and special abilities; some rooms activate immediately while others require specific action tiles. Players alternate taking actions to grow their workforce and resource base, then score for constructed buildings and collected gold at game end.

Eurogame de colocación de losetas y trabajadores que captura las sensaciones de un Eurogame grande pero en una caja muy pequeña, de setup rápido y partidas de 40'.

This game has really surprised me. One of the most compact and well-rounded 2player little box games ever. Feels like an Worker Placement Euro in so little time, with cool decisions and emotion. A real gem!

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Can I excavate a face‑down Room that’s behind a Wall or behind other face‑down Rooms?

You may only Excavate a face‑down Room that is accessible via a clear orthogonal path from the Cave Entrance with no Walls or other face‑down Rooms in the way; face‑down Rooms always block. The “Undermining” Action specifically allows Excavation through Walls. (page 5)

If I raze (remove) a Wall, does that remove or break adjacent Rooms?

Removing a Wall returns it to the supply and grants the depicted Goods, and “Removing the Wall does not affect already‑placed Rooms.” You also may not remove the outer natural Walls. (page 5)

When I Furnish a Cavern, do Room tiles require specific Walls and can I rotate them to fit?

To Furnish you pay the printed cost and place the tile on an empty Cavern that matches the tile’s Wall configuration; dark segments are required, light segments optional, and you may rotate the tile to match. Natural outer Walls count as Walls for placement. (page 6)

What’s the difference between orange and blue Rooms and when can I use their actions?

Orange Rooms are used when you take an Action tile showing 1, 2, or 3 (the number is how many different orange Rooms you may use), while blue Rooms are always active whenever their trigger occurs and are not used via those numbered Actions. Also, you must always have more orange Rooms than blue Rooms and may not build a blue Room that would make them equal. (pages 6–7)

Can I trade Emmer, Flax, or Gold for Food whenever I want, and at what rate?

Yes: the Anytime Action lets you, at any time and any number of times, exchange Emmer, Flax, or Gold for Food at a 1:1 ratio. (page 7)
