Jass

1796 · Card Game

Jass

A traditional Dutch and Swiss point-trick game played with a 36-card deck (aces down to sixes) or a shortened French deck where queen=ober, jack=unter and ten=banner. Players form partnerships and play tricks, with one suit declared trump. Trumps follow a different rank and point value schedule than the other suits, and players may overtrump or play trump on a non-trump lead even while holding the led suit, with restrictions on undertrumping. During the first trick players can announce melds (Weis) such as sequences or sets; the best Weis held by the team scores after the trick, and partners may combine Weis scores.
