Mage Wars Arena

Players take the roles of rival spellcasters who face off in tactical arena combat. Each player builds a spellbook from a point pool, then casts spells from that book each turn to summon creatures, equip items, lay enchantments, and directly attack the opposing mage. The board is a gridded arena of zones that governs movement and placement; summoned creatures and objects occupy the board and interact with attacks and effects (Burn, Stun, Push, etc.). Gameplay blends card-style spell selection with miniature movement and area control, and each mage’s school gives access to distinct strategies and signature spells.

Requires a group of dedicated players. This one required even more than Netrunner for new players, so I didnt see any reason to keep this when we will always prefer Netrunner and sometimes even Skytear over it.

This is what I wish Magic the Gathering was. It is an epic customizable card game providing you with the most thematic feeling of dueling mages ever devised. It does take a lot longer to play (90 minutes) and is less portable, so it doesn't fit the same niche as Magic does as a portable filler, but man the experience is amazing. The game is almost pure strategy since you don't have to worry about random card draws. Yes, there are dice, but they have a very predictable bell curve and they provide randomness of outcome rather than randomness of choice. You can make plans around the dice, and you can make contingency plans in case things don't go as you wished. That's not something you can do with random card draws where your decisions are limited by what's in your hand. Having your entire spell book available at all times makes this game incredibly strategic, and having the board gives you tactical positioning as well. I just can't stress enough how much fun this game is and how much it rewards good strategic planning. It truly is a battle of wits with fireballs. The only downside I can think of is the learning curve. It's not really any worse than other CCG's or Miniature games though, so if you're comfortable with those you should be fine. Still, there are a lot of rules and card interactions to digest and it will take even an experienced gamer many plays before they get everything right.

As wargame it's really cool. As card game it's nothing I expected. All in all it's dice combat, little hand management and lots of tactics. I think people more into confrontational wargames will enjoy it more than people that comes from Magic The Gathering.
