Sid Meier's Civilization: The Boardgame

Players guide the growth of a civilization beginning in 4000 BC, founding villages that develop into cities and metropolises. Gameplay combines exploration, expansion, research, construction and military action: players explore a large map to reveal resources and native defenders, send settlers to found new cities, research technologies from a tech deck, and build Wonders and units across multiple eras. Cities grow through four size levels to increase production, which funds construction of civilian and military units for defense and conquest. Two rule sets (standard and advanced) adjust complexity, and play uses a large map with numerous unit and card components to track progress.

Unfinished, needs tweaking. Random setup too powerful in determining game results.

The port of a computer game is fantastic, or at least was until I played Through the Ages and 7 Ages. The game has mellowed with age - and when I have the time to play it, I keep thinking about 7 Ages instead...
