Canterbury

As Saxon Lords in the late 6th century, players develop Canterbury into a prosperous capital. They use limited resources to build structures across the city’s 25 districts, providing services such as water, food, religion, defense, commerce, and culture. Higher-level services require more basic services to be established first. Each construction increases both the city’s prosperity and the builder’s personal prosperity. Players balance publicly scrutinized withdrawals from the city treasury with their building plans. When the city reaches 300 Prosperity, one final round is played, and the player with the most personal Prosperity wins.

It's an area control game, where your ability to place guys is dependent on the rules for placing the building tile into the region, and then your ability to afford that tile. Perhaps too simple in action choices. There are a Lot of moves you can take that are just as good as any other move. There is also lots of bookkeeping as for each tile placement you advance three different scoring markers. Much to my sadness, there's no significant difference in placing buildings in any area of the grid. I enjoy this game, but I was hoping it was going to be of similar intensity as Urban Sprawl. It has potential, maybe with an expansion one day it will up it's depth?

Strong conceptually. Interesting strategy. Visually nothing much to look at. Just too too fiddly and too many scoring details to track continuously, making it very un-elegant.
