Players take the roles of 18th-century naturalists hired to compile a foundational encyclopedia of natural history. The game uses dice-based worker placement: players draw and roll dice each round, place them on personal boards, and spend them by color and value to take actions such as visiting the Embassy, raising funds at the Bank, or hiring researchers at the University. Players select Animal cards to study, organize expeditions to observe creatures in their habitats, and publish research to score victory points. Dice manipulation and use of opponents’ dice provide ways to mitigate luck, and scoring rewards published studies and collected sets of Animals.
