Players take the roles of leading statesmen in the early American republic, guiding politics from the Washington administration through the era that culminates with Abraham Lincoln. Players manage individual politicians, parties, offices and spendable Influence to address recurring Issues such as wars, debt, financial panics, territorial expansion and sectional division. Every four years top politicians compete in elections to determine the president, while a Public Support track, tax and Issue cards, and an expanding map shape strategic options. Negotiation, card play and resource management drive outcomes; an optional non-diplomacy variant replaces bargaining with strict card drafting and resource use.
