Steel Driver

Players act as investment brokers developing railway companies across North America by bidding investment cubes to gain control of corporations and build track. Each turn players allocate cubes into up to six companies to win a single share of control and to supply those companies with resources to lay track to locations that carry profit values. After building, companies pay profits to their current controllers; profits reset each turn and earned cash serves only as victory points, not for future bids. Play proceeds over five rounds with repeated bidding and track-building, and a final endgame payout based on each company’s network reach across regions.

This is a quick playing, dry-looking but satisfying game for 6. In this game, players bid over 5 rounds for control of the 6 companies. Winning the bid lets you spend your bid to lay track and collect money. At the end of the game, whoever has the most winning bids for each of the companies get to collect cubes from the board, trying to complete sets for bonus points. It's simple to play and quite elegant. In terms of the route building it's similar to Milestones, and in terms of bidding for the companies, it's similar to Imperial 2030. The thing that makes this game special is it's simplicity in delivering that experience with the short playtime and the high player count. ☆ Art and components ☆ Innovative mechanics ★ Handles 5 or more players ★ Good with min or max players ★ Low time between turns ★ Comfortable complexity ★ Re-playability ★☆☆ Enjoyment
