La Isla del Botín

Players are treasure hunters who play map cards to numbered landings around a cursed island in an effort to assemble contiguous routes to buried loot. Each round, players assign cards to landings and then an exploration occurs: if a landing has received sufficient map pieces, treasures are revealed and distributed among the players present there on a first-come, first-served basis. The game requires cooperation to combine map segments but also competitive timing and hand management to secure the best shares of loot. Resource management and timing decisions determine who contributes to discoveries and who profits from them while players also contend with the island’s curse effects.

This is a cute filler game where players play cards into island spots to draw treasure cards worth points. The treasures score differently depending on the type, but most bring along with them curse cubes. At the end of the game each player drafts a penalty card starting with whoever has the fewest curses, so it pays to take actions to reduce your curse pile. In fact, ending the game with too many results in a auto-loss even if you had the most valuable treasures. The game comes with lots of ways to hurt your opponents, and even an event deck that changes the rules of the game in some dick way at the start of each round. It's a short, punishing and fun romp. If you like games that have a little take that but are mostly about the game punching you (while you compete to try to be the player least punched), then this is a solid filler option to explore. ★ Art, Iconography and components functional ★ Clever or interesting mechanisms ★ Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players ★ Multiple plays stay interesting ☆ Low or mitigatable luck elements ★★☆☆☆ Raw enjoyment
