Gameplay centers on developing brains, acquiring language, domesticating fauna, exploring new lands, practicing religion, diving for resources, and engaging in internal power struggles among rulers, priests, merchants, and warlords. Conflict can be both external and internal, with regime changes driven by poor performance of social classes. Victory comes from specialization rather than mere territorial conquest, so cultural or ideological achievements can outscore imperial expansion. The box supports 1–4 players, two modular maps with hex chits for varied terrains (including alternate planets), and offers solitaire and cooperative variants; it also integrates with other titles in the series for extended starting scenarios.
