Chronicles of Avel

Players take on the roles of heroes in a cooperative fantasy campaign, preparing gear, naming characters and equipping weapons, armor and potions within a limited backpack space. The game uses a modular hex-tile map that changes each session as players explore, encounter monsters and resolve combat by rolling dice. Loot and upgrades are gained from victories, and some items are recovered by searching a magical bag using only touch. Groups work together to defend the realm’s stronghold, complete objectives and ultimately confront a powerful Beast and its servants.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

Do goblins serve one of the moons or are they independent?

Goblins originally didn’t serve the moons but now, by treaty with Karkora, they act as servants of the Livid Sickle — they attack by surprise and act mischievously (p.5).

If a vampire bites someone, do they become a vampire too?

Yes — vampires feed on blood and bitten victims sometimes turn into vampire servants (p.6).

If I kill a skeleton but don’t bury it, will it come back?

Skeletons are reanimated when the Aventurine Shard’s green light shines on an unburied body, and burying the corpse will stop it from rising again (p.6).

What’s the difference between the Fungi Ruler, Fungi Servant and a Fungal Thrall?

The Fungi Ruler spreads spores when the Livid Sickle is high; Fungi Servants are infected animals that are aggressive but not very resistant; Fungal Thralls are infected people who are more intelligent, set traps and often keep their former items (pp.4–5).

Can golems become an earth elemental?

Yes — when enough golems gather together they connect and create a powerful earth elemental (p.5).

Are dragons and reptilians linked to the Umbri Dragon?

Yes — smaller dragons and reptilian humanoids are servants of the Umbri Dragon: dragons gather and sing under its influence while reptilian villages are directed by shamans who channel the Dragon’s magic (pp.7–8).
