Clank!: Catacombs

Players explore a shifting underground dungeon built with tile-laying each game, searching for treasure, freeing prisoners and avoiding a skeletal dragon’s wrath. Gameplay centers on deck-building: players acquire and play cards to move, fight, and gather loot while generating noise that risks attracting the dragon and other hazards. Portals and wayshrines alter movement and objectives, and ghosts and other threats add tactical pressure. The standalone design uses a new dungeon deck but can integrate cards from prior sets for added variety.

What a great reimagination of an already outstanding game! Might not make original Clank! completely obsolete for me, but I really like all the new stuff here. Finally, I ended up selling my copy of the original. Catacombs is just too similar, but better. Definitely my number 1 game at the moment.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When do I add Clank! cubes and what happens if I get negative Clank!?

Whenever an effect says "+N Clank!" you add that many cubes from your personal supply to the Clank! area; negative Clank! removes your cubes from the Clank! area (if you don't have enough there, you can remove later in the turn) and any leftover negative Clank! is lost at end of turn (see page 6).

Do a card's "Acquire" or "Arrive" effects happen when I take the card or when I play it?

Acquire effects happen immediately when you take the card from the Dungeon Row, while Arrive effects trigger immediately when a card is revealed in the Row (before any Dragon Attack); playing the card later does not retrigger those texts (see pages 7 and 11).

How exactly does a Dragon Attack work and what do Ghost cubes do?

After refilling the Dungeon Row, if any newly added card has a Dragon Attack symbol, put all cubes from the Clank! area into the bag, draw cubes equal to the Dragon Marker's rage space, and each colored cube deals damage to that player while black cubes are set aside; white Ghost cubes cause every player to take one damage and are returned to the Clank! area after the attack (see page 12).

If I enter a Crystal Cave or go through a Portal, can I keep spending Boots to move the rest of my turn?

Entering a Crystal Cave makes you exhausted so you cannot spend any more Boots for the rest of that turn (though Teleport effects still work), whereas moving through a Portal counts as one Boot for the whole portal movement and you may continue moving afterward if you have Boots remaining (see pages 10 and 11).

What happens when my Health Meter fills or when I escape with an Artifact—do I still take turns and how is scoring handled?

If your Health Meter fills you are knocked out and stop taking regular turns (you score 0 if you were knocked out in the Depths); if you reach the Crypt with an Artifact you escape, take the remainder of your turn, remove your pawn, take a Mastery token (+20), and then no longer take regular turns—final scoring then sums Artifact value, tokens, Gold, and card points (see pages 12 and 14).

How do Lock icons and Lockpicks work for tunnels and for Chests/Libraries/Prisons?

You cannot use a tunnel with a Lock icon unless you spend a Lockpick from your supply to cover that icon (it then remains unlocked for the game); similarly, while in a room with a locked Chest/Library/Prison you may spend a Lockpick to access that feature and resolve its immediate effect (see pages 7, 8, and 10).
