Dune: Imperium

Players lead rival Great Houses vying for control of Arrakis, balancing military force, political influence, and economic gain in a science‑fiction setting. Gameplay combines deck‑building with worker placement: players draft and acquire cards that determine which board spaces their Agents can occupy, then alternately place Agents to take actions. When Agents are exhausted, players reveal remaining cards to generate Persuasion (for card acquisition) and Swords (for resolving the round’s Conflict). Rounds feature a rotating Conflict that rewards combat winners, while four political factions offer ongoing benefits for alignment. Deck choices and Agent placement shape each player’s strategic strengths and interactions.

#47 Great deck building and worker placement game with a good theme. And there also a combat and a race who will end the game. It's fantastic! Relatively fast for a strategy game, it is very well designed, with multiple ways to achieve victory. I haven't had a single game where a player got ahead of the others very significantly, and I've played with a lot of different people. All game finales were always very tense with no clear victor until the end. Fantastic design! The base game is great enough on its own. The only thing I would add is the capacity for any player to discard the current set of cards in the market. A player with a good card building engine can get stuck on bad cards in the market that no one buys, because improving the deck is not the only way of winning the game.

Great combination of deck building and worker placement. As a fan of both mechanisms, I really enjoy these parts. However, there are unique cards in the deck, and most intrigue cards are one-of-a-kind, which increases the luck factor—especially when some intrigue cards directly award VP. So my base rating is 7/10. I love the Dune IP, so I give it an 8.

Rules questions

Answered from the rulebook by Ludoya's rules assistant.

When can I play Intrigue cards (Plot, Combat, Endgame)?

Plot Intrigue cards may be played any time during one of your own Agent or Reveal turns; Combat Intrigue cards may only be played during the Combat phase; Endgame Intrigue cards are played at the end of the game. (See Intrigue cards, page 7; Combat Intrigue details, page 12.)

If a card has both an Agent box and a Reveal box, can I use both effects when I play it?

No — you use only one box per play: use the Agent box on an Agent turn or the Reveal box on a Reveal turn. (Card anatomy and phase rules, page 8.)

If a card or space recruits troops on my turn, can I put those troops straight into the Conflict?

Yes — you may deploy any troops recruited during your current turn (from the card and/or the board space) to the Conflict, and additionally up to two troops from your garrison. Troops you don’t deploy are placed in your garrison. (See Deploying troops to the Conflict, page 10.)

When do I reshuffle my discard pile to form a new deck?

Whenever you need to draw a card and your deck is empty, reshuffle your discard pile to form a new deck and then continue drawing. (Deck rules, page 6; clarifications about not reshuffling until you must draw, page 13.)

How do Faction Alliances (the Alliance token) work — can I lose an Alliance if an opponent overtakes me?

Reaching 4 Influence on a Faction’s track earns the first player an Alliance token and its Victory Point; if another player later rises to a higher space on that track, you must give them the Alliance token and you lose that Victory Point. (Faction Influence and Alliances, page 7.)

In Combat, if I pass on playing Combat Intrigue cards can I still play one later in the same Combat phase?

Yes — starting with First Player and proceeding clockwise, each player may play any number of Combat Intrigue cards or pass, and a player who passed earlier may still play later until all players involved pass consecutively. (Combat Intrigue timing and passing, page 12.)
