2011 · City Building
Strasbourg
Players lead rising families in 15th-century Strasbourg, seeking positions for family members within the city’s craft guilds, church, and nobility. Gameplay centers on a distinctive bidding and influence-management system: spend influence to take roles as apprentices, assistants, or masters and pay admission fees when required. Players balance strategic placement, resource expenditure, and reactions to opponents’ moves across multiple rounds. The game emphasizes accessible rules, tactical decision-making, and interaction as players compete to maximize their family’s standing and fame by the end of the game.

Evan0.9 This is a ridiculously tight bidding game where you are fighting off random card draws to try to beat your opponents to unknowingly taking the spaces you desperately need to get points and to not suffer uncompleted goal penalties. Many of the secret goal cards push up against other cards, so the game really forces you to put everything into winning the few things you need, and then hope that another player didn't happen to randomly draw and then is able to complete higher value cards. For example, a common goal is to have three meeples in one color region of the board. There are three auctions to place a guy with the top 2 bidders getting to place, assuming they have the money to do so. Mess that up once, and rather than getting a ton of points for your card, you get -3. We didn't enjoy this game at all. :star: Art, Iconography and components functional :nostar: Clever or interesting mechanisms :star: Reasonably low downtime between turns with mildly AP players :nostar: Multiple plays stay interesting :nostar: Low or mitigatable luck elements :nostar::nostar::nostar::nostar::nostar: Raw enjoyment
