Ashes Reborn: Rise of the Phoenixborn

Two players each control a Phoenixborn, powerful demi-god champions battling to absorb the Ashes of their foes and ascend. Players build and customize decks of spells, summons, and relics, then use a mix of resource management, hand-played cards, and board positioning to attack, defend, and trigger abilities. The game plays as a head-to-head card duel with alternating activation, casting options, and tactical choices about when to spend resources or sacrifice units. Victory comes by reducing the opponent’s Phoenixborn to ashes or meeting other ascent conditions through careful deck construction and in-game sequencing.

Awesome Card Game. Kind of LCG, but not really, because you don't need any expansion for playing tournaments. The way it combines dice and cards, the system of playing and the artwork makes me love it more and more everytime I play.

A 1vs1 card game using a dice system to generate resources. PROS - The rules are pretty straightforward. - The integration of theme and mechanics is well done. - The possibility of mixing dice for every character allows for incredible deckbuilding possibilities. - The theme, art and production are remarkable. CONS - The dice system is dissapointing. It could have been much more interesting, and it feels flat and too swingy. - The characters feel too enclosed into their archetype, and building decks (with 8 total characters) seems difficult.

Can my exhausted Phoenixborn guard a unit?

Yes — a Phoenixborn can be declared as the single guard for a targeted unit even if it is exhausted (page 9).

When I attack an opponent's Phoenixborn with several units, how is damage resolved and when do attackers become exhausted?

You resolve each attacking unit one at a time in an order you choose; an unblocked attacker deals its attack value to the Phoenixborn and then receives 1 exhaustion token, while blocked attackers follow the counter/block resolution before exhaustion is placed (page 6).

If I attack a unit and the defending unit doesn't or can't counter, what happens?

If the target unit does not or cannot counter (for example because it's exhausted), total the attacking units' attack values and deal that amount of damage to the target unit, then place 1 exhaustion token on each attacking unit; the target unit does not become exhausted if it didn't counter (page 9).

If a defending unit counters, how is its damage assigned against multiple attacking units?

When a unit counters, it and the attacking units deal damage as a battle, and if the countering unit is assigning damage among multiple attackers the defending player chooses how to split its damage among those attacking units (see the 'countering' example on page 8 and rules on page 9).

How do ready spells and Focusing work — does adding another copy use an extra spellboard slot and when do Focus effects activate?

When you play a copy of a ready spell onto a spellboard that already has that spell, the new copy is placed beneath the current copy and does not take an additional spellboard slot; Focus 1 becomes active when you have two copies (Focus 2 when you have three), enabling the listed Focus effects (page 11).

Do wound tokens reduce a unit's or Phoenixborn's life, and how do wounds cause destruction?

Wound tokens are tracked separately and do not change a card's life value; when a unit's or Phoenixborn's wound tokens are equal to or greater than its life it is destroyed, and some effects can place wound tokens directly without dealing damage (page 12).
