Pax Penning

Players portray local rulers and influential families invited to help form a new Swedish kingdom as the Viking Age ends. Through rounds of actions they gather resources, levy troops, arrange marriages, and influence towns and the crown to increase their status and hold. Strategic choices balance cooperation with the king against pursuing independent power, using economic development, diplomacy, and military presence to secure long-term legacy. Play centers on resource management, area influence, and timing of commitments to the central authority while adapting to changing political opportunities and rival players.

A truly remarkable Pax experience. It's a bit hard to understand during the first game, but once you get it, the game flows really well. There's real tension when the king approaches Sigtuna, you're never sure who might win with the Heir victory, since there are different victory conditions, but the Heir always changes the game. Conversations unfold and suspicions arise, but in the end, everything comes as a surprise.
