Risk: The Lord of the Rings

Players control factions of good or evil and maneuver armies across a map of Middle-earth. The game adds leaders, missions and sites of power to the familiar area-control and dice-combat mechanics, while an artifact token (the One Ring) acts as a timing mechanism that triggers the endgame when it is removed. Players recruit and place different unit types, resolve battles with dice, complete quests via adventure and territory cards, and vie to control key locations to score advantages. The Two Towers edition uses an incomplete map unless paired with its expansion; later reimplementations restore the full map.
