Critical Hits: A Simple Critical Hit System for the Next Generation of Fantasy RPGs

A supplemental critical-hit system for fantasy role-playing games adds greater risk and consequence to combat. Critical results can cause severe wounds, permanent maimings, broken weapons, and other effects, with charts that the GM or players adapt to fit the situation and creature involved. The system supports d20-based games but can be adjusted for other systems that include extraordinary successes or failures. Its injuries and mishaps encourage players to consider alternatives to combat and describe their actions in greater detail, while giving characters lasting scars, fears, vendettas, and other story elements.
