Journey to the Center of the Earth

Players map a route from an entrance volcano down to the planet’s core and then onward to an exit volcano, recreating the expedition from the novel. Each turn reveals two cards: a coordinate card that locates where on the grid to act, and a tunnel card that dictates which segment to draw (straight, curve, water spring, discovery or a dangerous creature). Players draw the indicated tunnel segment into the chosen coordinate cell, building a continuous path while managing water points and available exits. When the tunnel deck is exhausted players must spend water or be eliminated; when the coordinate deck runs out an exit volcano becomes unusable. Character abilities can be invoked to alter or mitigate these effects.

Cuando esté juego salió al mercado encontramos muy buenas críticas, esto, más su estética y la falta de 'roll & write' en nuestra ludoteca nos hizo tomar la decisión de añadirlo a la colección. Sin embargo, en los últimos meses y tras conversación con otros jugones nos hemos encontrado críticas bastante negativas hacia el juego, todas ellas relacionadas con la dificultad que presenta el mismo para conseguir enterar y salir del Centro de la Tierra. Lo que generalmente la gente toma como algo negativo para nosotros es algo positivo, ya que conseguir completar la aventura no es algo fácil que solo los aventureros que usen correctamente los recursos que ofrece el juego conseguirán terminar la partida. Además el juego cuenta con la ayuda de tres personajes que impiden que nos quedemos bloqueados en el interior de la Tierra. Para nosotros un buen juego que funciona bien tanto en nuestra mesa como en nuestras aulas, ya que lo hemos llevado en varias ocasiones siendo un éxito total.

A roll-and-write (or flip-and-write) simple game. PROS - The game is very straightforward, pretty easy to teach and learn, but also quite open to different approaches. - It offers opportunities for interaction, which is not common in these games. CONS - In their first plays, the game can feel unfair when another player blocks your perfect tunnel or the volcano you were clearly headed for is the first one erupting. It is a matter of timing and keeping your options open, but that's not easy to see when starting. Tell new players about it!
